As “Consumer America” we constantly desire to have the biggest, the baddest, and the coolest of everything before someone else does, especially the French. In that overwhelming desire competition builds and compassion for others is thrown out the window. We forget about the life that others have beyond ourselves. We forget that children are dying every second because of unclean water in their community. Shoot, we complain about the water ban so we won’t be able to water the lawn. We forget about the families that are dying every day from malnourishment and hunger. Yet we are more concern about eating all organic products with no preservatives or pesticides. We forget about the son or daughter who has no clue who his/her family is because they left them when they were born. We fight over who got the better Wii game, who has the best iPhone apps.
As Americans, even with the crappy economy and lousy housing market, we have it better than 90% of the rest of the world. We live in a country where we have everything and complain about everything. God has blessed us tremendously. With Thanksgiving next week and Christmas in a month I challenge you to reflect on what you take for granted and to think about how you can give what you have that someone else is without.
Here are a few resources to help make someone else’s holiday a rememberable holiday.
Thanksgiving is a holiday that we all should be thankful of the all the blessings in our life. A great way to do that is to celebrate what we are thankful for around family, friends, and food.
To me, Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. If you really think about it, it is the second best holiday behind Christmas. Why? you might ask. Think about it. Family. Food. Sleep. Board games. Leftovers. Nap. Grandma’s cooking. Father-in-law’s turkey. Football. Niece and Nephews. Stuffing. Mash Potatoes. Hanging up Christmas decor (not my favorite). 15 people in one house. 2 Dogs. Craziness. Fun. Black Friday.
Just in time for the Holiday season, the American Humanist society throws this “Grinch like” ad campaign into the wintery mix of Christmas. What a shame. We all truly know the true meaning of Christmas. Duh!
Sometimes I wonder what my life would be like if I didn’t make all those stupid mistakes in middle school. If only I could of not got suspended from school, if only I didn’t snick out of the house, if only I didn’t hang out with some of the people that I did. It really makes me think about how life would be. Would I be the same person? Would my life have taken a different direction?
The truth remains, where I am now is exactley where I need to be. Even though there where some tough times in my life and things that I regret, I cannot continually rewinding my life and think about those things. God has a plan for me. A plan for you. A plan that the Bible says will “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jer. 29:11. Life sucks at times, and we roll with the punches BUT God allows us to go through those situations in our life to make us stronger. Without those experiences in my life I have no clue who I would be today. It has defined my character and created my identity. Yesterday’s regrets affect today.
What is your “if only” moment? Every one of us has one, two or a hundred different scenarios in which we would do or say something differently. That things we wish we wouldn’t have done. Those words we wish we never said. That relationship that we should have avoided-or never began. We all have regrets, things we would do differently if given the chance. So if life inevitably brings those “if only” moments, how do we handle the regrets that haunt us? How can we turn the “if onlys” from our past decisions into something more, something that will help both us and others today?
Join us the next 3 weeks to take a closer look at those moments in our lives that we wish we could change.
So the final day of voting has come. America will wake up tomorrow with a new President of the United States of America. Who will it be? How will the face of America be different? How will the economy change? How will your life change? Pray.
